Take It, Or Leave It? Stay, Or Go?

What is your dog's default - take things unless told to leave them? Or leave stuff until they're asked to take it? There's quite a difference between the two!

I'll be honest, most people and training focuses on the 'leave it' approach. There are countless ways to do this, some of which are kinder and fairer on the dog than others. Indeed, that was how I started out with Ripley because it was what I knew at the time. However, as I've said time and again Ripley is the reason that I have had to learn an awful lot more over the past decade; changing my approach to teaching self-control is one of those things that changed. Not necessarily because I needed to for Ripley, to be fair, but the new things I was learning just made a lot of sense.

Check out this short video of Peak with a highly prized toy (which is usually hidden away, because Ripley isn't allowed nice things 😂) I don't tell him to leave it, or stay when I throw it. I swear if he could roll his eyes he would 🙄 He's been raised with a default leave it. Full disclosure - he's far from perfect! However, that's down to me not being consistent all the time (a topic for another day 😉) I do set him up for success here; I keep the movements slow and calm, rather than busy and exciting. That's not to say he wouldn't be succesful with more movement, but I would do that with a lower value toy to start.

I believe this approach brings clarity, and clarity is kindness in dog training. When our dogs aren't sure about how they should behave in a given situation it can cause some anxiety. I want confidence, not confusion!

And because I know someone will be thinking it... What would I have done if he'd made a grab for the toy before I cued him to? I would have laughed at him, called him a cheat and had a think about why it might have happened. Then I can adjust my approach next time if needed.

The foundations of how I teach both a default leave it and a default stay are in my course 'Get Your Dog's Attention (And Keep It!)'.
